Frequently Asked Questions

What is cream cheese?

Cream cheese is something you put on a bagel, right? It’s actually a bit more technical than that. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, cream cheese contains at least 33% milk fat with a moisture content of not more than 55%. The result? A creamy, wholesome spread that can be consumed plain or flavored (garden vegetable cream cheese is especially popular), and can also be used in desserts, sauces, spreads, fillings, and appetizers.

What is Neufchatel cheese?

We’re often asked if Neufchatel cheese is the same as cream cheese. Neufchatel is a type of cream cheese that contains 1/3 less fat and fewer calories than traditional cream cheese. It has a softer texture than plain cream cheese, but still brings the same rich creaminess to your cream cheese recipes.

Is your cream cheese gluten-free?

Most dairy foods, including Schreiber’s process cheese, natural cheese, yogurt, and cream cheese are produced without gluten-containing ingredients and/or meet the Food and Drug Administration’s definition of “gluten-free” as having less than 20 ppm of gluten. We do have some products containing pretzels, graham pieces, or similar ingredients. These products do contain gluten and are distinctly labeled.

Can you freeze cream cheese?

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. We don’t recommend freezing cream cheese because it will change the texture and consistency of the product, and it might not perform the same in cooking or baking applications.

What formats and sizes does your cream cheese come in?

Our cream cheese comes in a variety of formats, from the 8oz cream cheese bar (or brick) to larger sizes for bulk cream cheese purchases. Schreiber offers cream cheese in 3- to 5-pound tubs, individual portion cups, and industrial bulk and barrel formats.

Do you have any cream cheese recipes you can share?

Of course! We have both sweet and savory cream cheese recipes, from lemon cheesecake and sweet grilled cheese sandwiches to salmon tartine and cream cheese pizza sauce.
